RSPCA Preston & District Branch Latest News

A lot of building work has been going on at the centre over the last 18 months. All of which has been to improve the existing animal accomodation, or build extra housing for the animals:

Rabbit Accomodation

Another addition to the improvements we have made to the centre is the purpose built rabbit accommodation, previously rabbits were housed in a large wooden building in hutches, we now have a heated indoor area for each rabbit, and an outside exercise run attached. This new building means that the rabbits are much more comfortable and have a larger area to exercise and explore.

Inspectors Kennels

In 2009 we raised funding for a new block of kennels to be built which would be dedicated to housing cruelly treated or neglected Case dogs rescued by RSPCA Inspectors. A lot of the funding was very kindly donated by a local family in memory of their Late son Calvin Pollock Leary who tragically passed away in a traffic accident in Preston last year. The kennels have been dedicated in memory of Calvin who was a true animal lover. We would like to thank everyone who helped make these kennels possible as they will make a huge difference to the work we can continue to do!

Kennel Extensions

Over the past few months twelve of our dog kennels have been extended to include outdoor exercise runs meaning the dogs can enjoy the fresh air and stretch their legs rather than being confined to a small bed area. It will also allow staff to thoroughly clean their kennels much easier and more efficiently. This improvement will benefit the dogs massively during their stay at the centre so a big Thank You to all those who donated in recent months that could make this possible.

Sam/Bracken gets a home!

Bracken had been at the centre for over 12 months looking for a home. He came to the centre because he was found as a stray by the dog wardens. His owner never came looking for him. He became quite stressed being in a kennel environment and when people would walk by his kennel every day and ignore him he would get very upset. He spent some time in the office in reception where he felt a lot more calm and content and really showed his very sweet personality when out of a stressful environment. In April 2010 a gentleman adopted him and took him home. We are please to say he has settled in well and is proving to be a very loving and loyal dog to his new owner.

RSPCA Preston and District Safe Haven Sponsorship Scheme

Safe Haven SchemeThe Safe Haven Scheme was launched in September 2008. The scheme offers well-wishers the opportunity to give a regular amount every month, from as little as £3, to sponsor a dog kennel, cat pen or rabbit run at the Preston Animal Centre.

Preston & District RSPCA Animal Centre rescues thousands of animals each year. The animals come into the Centre from various situations; stray, mistreated or neglected, sick or injured, or simply because their owners no longer want them.

The work the Branch carries out costs in the region of £250,000 each year. We cannot exaggerate enough that we rely entirely on local donations from the people like yourselves; we receive no state aid, lottery grants or financial help from the National RSPCA. We really need your help to maintain this level of animal welfare.

ABANDONED ANIMALS

In recent months the Branch has sadly seen numerous animals being dumped, tied up, or abandoned at the Centre. This is not only extremely stressful for the animals involved, but also puts huge pressure on the Branch and the staff taking care of the animals. Throughout the year, there are many occasions where the Branch already becomes full with our intake of residents that have come from all sorts backgrounds; mistreated, neglected, sick or injured, unwanted, stray and abandoned. We also have a non-destruction policy, unless the animal is suffering or dangerous.

Dana is a beautiful female Akita that was left tied to the railings in August 2008. Her owner clearly no longer wanted Dana, but unfortunately we never found out why. Because she was abandoned we sadly do not know any of her likes, or dislikes, not even her real name, or her exact age. Luckily Dana is in the process of being adopted with a lovely family, it is just a shame she was put through a stressful ordeal.

Seven rabbits were also dumped on the road at the top of the Centre's drive. We were alerted by a member of public who had seen the gentleman offloading several different rabbits by the side of the road. Staff drove up to them and thankfully managed to bring them all to safety. They are all well, and are now looking for new homes
