RSPCA Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Adopting an Animal

We are looking for life-long, permanent homes for our animals and we need to be sure you can provide such a home. This means we have to ask questions about your personal circumstances, including your ability to meet routine and emergency Vet bills, which will become solely your responsibility following adoption.

We do ask all the family to visit the animal at the Centre before a booking can be taken and, if you are adopting a dog, and you already have a one, that you also bring them to the Centre to meet a potential new member of the household. Also we do not rehome dogs to homes where there are children under the age of 5 years and if you live in rented accommodation you will need written permission from the council or landlord who owns the property.

Adoption Procedure

The branch (although under the umbrella of the RSPCA) is a separate, self-supporting charity. We depend on the people of the local area for the funding needed to maintain our work for the animal welfare including the Preston Animal Centre and the Clinic.

The normal adoption procedure is as follows:-

  1. Select the Animal You Wish to Adopt (this includes having a full history known by the centre on the animal being explained as well as a report of the animals behaviour in the centre and at least one introduction to the animal with all people living in the household before booking, also if you live in rented accommodation you will need written permission to own a pet or pets at the property, some animals will need further visits after booking, please ask for more details)
  2. Fill in Questionnaire (this is done at reception with a member of staff once)
  3. Home Visit Arranged (these are done by volunteers and take on average 3 to 7 days
  4. Receive a call from the Animal Centre to let you know when you can collect your new pet (this is so that we can ensure that the animal is ready before leaving the centre and that a staff member can have all of the adoption forms prepared for you when you arrive)
  5. Collect Animal (Personal I.D. Required, you will be given an adoption pack and a member of staff will go through the adoption forms with you).
  6. Possible post Home Visit (to see how your pet is settling in)
